iHola! I am “Señora V.” and I am the K-8 Spanish teacher at St. Peter Academy. I am proud of my Colombian background and I have been fluent in Spanish and English for my entire life. I attended Catholic schools from grades K-12 in Bergen County. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Elementary Education from Rider University. I have my certification in English as a Second Language (ESL) as well.
My first year teaching Spanish began at a small Catholic School almost twenty years ago. The next year I became the Spanish teacher in Ringwood and almost a decade later in Wayne NJ. A couple of years later, I decided to shift gears and teach ESL at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Hackensack, NJ. After a 5 year hiatus, I went back into teaching Spanish at a high school in Rutherford.
I reached a full circle in my career and I am blessed that the road brought me here to St. Peter Academy in September 2016. I have been able to use my most creative ideas from my past teaching experiences. I focus on the students learning Spanish at both the cognitive and conversational level. I focus on getting perfect complete answers (according to their ability). I explain to my students HOW and WHY the language functions as it does and compare it to English so that they have a better understanding of the both languages. From grades K-8, I make sure my students develop and master their Spanish skills in four main areas: listening/comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. I infuse technology in my classroom and enjoy articulating with all the K-8 teachers to help each student achieve their personal best in my Spanish class.
Teaching Spanish is my greatest passion and joy. I am enthusiastic about bringing my love of the language and culture to my students each day. I hope that they too will develop a love of learning Spanish not only at Saint Peter Academy, but beyond.
